Due to years of stagnation, the bottom has become layered with the infamous smelly black sludge that squishes through your toes and smells of sulphur. For those that don't know, it is decomposing organic matter. Weeds, leaves, dead fish - all laying on the bottom slowing disintegrating back into the earth. The windmill aeration system we installed will help to speed the process (oxygen aids in decomposition), but we want to swim now. So I need to physically remove the muck. I pick the best projects.
The second part of this project is to spruce up the beach area by removing the weeds and adding more sand. I want people to actually WANT to come here to swim. Open invite, y'all.

Gardening in just plain cool. The ability to grow your own food is something to be cherished. At least you know where it came from - not some dirty processing plant covered in herbicides, pesticides, and nasty-cides.
Besides, it's just one more thing to get us off the couch and away from the television.
We're considering doubling the size of it next year.
08/29/12 The latest project for me was to install nesting boxes. The hens are "supposed" to lay eggs in the boxes so I don't step on them. I learned quickly that they need to be trained to do this. Not a difficult thing, though. I picked up one girl and set her up there, and all the others got curious and followed her lead. The next day, there was an egg in there. Easy peasy.
